Makeup

Makeup is magic, and don’t even try to convince us otherwise. There’s just no other way that you can experiment with literally hundreds of different looks, without having to undergo surgery or spend tons of money. Best of all, you can wash everything off at the end of the day and start over again in the morning!

A swipe of red on your lips can make your whole face look brighter instantly. A bit of tight-lining with white eyeliner on your lower lash line can open up your eyes (and no one will even know that you did anything). Want your face to look slimmer? Contouring is all the rage right now. Going for an “I woke up like this” look? Do a no-makeup makeup look! (Yes, there is such a thing. Yes, we recognize the irony of carefully applying makeup to make it look like you’re not wearing any. What’s your point?)Makeup can even make you look like your favorite celebrity, IRL or otherwise. Yes, for real. YouTube makeup superstars like Michelle Phan, Mykie of Glam and Gore, Lisa Eldridge, and Samantha and Nic Chapman have all built beauty and media empires teaching their viewers not only how to achieve a certain look (like the now-classic and alltime-favorite smokey eye), but also how to actually look like someone else. Phan, for example, has managed to transform herself into Miranda Kerr, Cara Delevingne, and, ehem, even the Mother of Dragons herself, Danaerys Targaryen.

Definition of Makeup

Makeup is any substance applied to the face to enhance its appearance. They’re often a mixture of natural and synthetic ingredients that come in liquid, powder, paste, gel, wax, or cream form.

Different products are used on different parts of the face to achieve a variety of effects: emphasizing the eyes or lips, evening out skin complexion, creating contours, and more.

Types of Makeup Products

Face makeup is used to create a uniform skin color and texture. These are the face powders, foundations, and concealers. Coverage will vary from sheer to heavy. Some prefer to find the best full coverage foundation, and some like a light coverage that allows freckles and rosiness to shine through.

Eyebrow makeup comes in powder, gel, and pencil form. You use these to darken and shape your brows, which can be a bit tricky until you get the hang of it. It’s always best to watch an online tutorial, visit a specialist to get your eyebrow style started, or buy an eyebrow shaping kit to play around with. Before purchasing the best brow product for you, consider your brow size, shape, and density. Do you have brows that need filling in or do you need to tone down your thick luscious brows? Answer these questions before purchasing and you're on the way to the best-looking brows on the block!

Eye makeup contours, shapes, and lines the eyes. These are eyeshadows, eyeliners, mascara, and false eyelashes. Eyeshadow palettes are fantastic to purchase if you’d like to use tones that compliment one another, and they are also cost-effective. Eyeliner also comes in a multitude of forms, from liquid and pencil to gels that you apply with a brush. If you are dying for that perfect winged eyeliner look, check out an online tutorial that will help you get that sharp line on point!

For your lips, there’s lipstick, lip tint, lip gloss, and lip liner. Colors come in shades of red, nude, and also the more daring dark ones like black, blue, purple, etc. Maybe you are obsessed these days with a matte lipstick, and fortunately, there are hundreds to choose from. Cream lipsticks tend to give you more of a shine, and lip stains will promise that your perfect pouters won’t budge for hours!A common misconception is that the more expensive the makeup, the better it must be. Nothing could be further from the truth. Some drugstore makeup brands perform just as well, if not better, than their more expensive, branded counterparts. Brands, such as NYX, which is available in most department stores, have been such a hit in recent years that they are opening up separate retail locations. Just make sure to do your homework: look up reviews, view expert photos that utilize the products on Beauty Advisor, and order recommended items to try out yourself!

Consulting with Emma has changed my life. What she recommended works for my skin. My pores have never looked so good. I suffer from large pores in my cheek area. If you’re thinking of trying her services, don't be shy, it’s well worth it!

I’ve been having a really hard time getting foundation to sit correctly and look good on my skin. After following Emma's advice, my skin is now so smooth I hardly wear foundation but when I do it doesn't look flaky. Thank you so much Emma!
